At Unizik junction, tensions are rising along the newly reconstructed Oby Okoli Road as shop owners and passersby accuse Fresh Point Restaurant of tampering with government infrastructure designed to manage water drainage.
According to local business operators, the eatery allegedly broke the government-approved structure meant to channel wastewater into the newly rehabilitated drainage system under the Governor Soludo-led administration. The Oby Okoli Road was one of the key rehabilitation projects aimed at improving accessibility and environmental conditions in the area.
A visit to the site by this reporter revealed growing concerns among neighboring traders. Complaints from affected shop owners were reportedly dismissed by the eatery’s management, leading to frustration among the business community.
One fruit seller, identified as Amaka (surname withheld), expressed dismay over the development. She claimed that the restaurant’s waste disposal system allows harmful contents to flow into the public drainage, worsening environmental conditions. According to her, when complaints were raised, the perpetrators justified their actions by insisting that they had the right to occupy and use the land space as they pleased.
Similarly, Favour, another business owner, voiced concerns that waste from the restaurant—allegedly linked to its sewage system—could lead to foul smells and unsanitary conditions, affecting the health of traders and customers alike.
As of the time of this report, multiple attempts to reach the management of Fresh Point Restaurant and a nearby car wash for their side of the story proved unsuccessful. The lack of response has further fueled frustrations, with affected traders calling on government authorities to intervene before the situation escalates.
With rising discontent in the area, stakeholders are urging the Anambra State government to step in and ensure compliance with urban planning regulations.
