The Imo State Commissioner for Industry, Mines, and Solid Minerals, Chief Ernest Ibejiakor, has pledged to facilitate a balanced resolution regarding the cost of sand production, ensuring it is fair to both the National Association of Miners, Imo State Chapter, and the Tipper Drivers Union. Chief Ibejiakor urged both parties to reconvene after discussing the matter with their respective members.
This assurance came after a meeting held at the State Secretariat, Port Harcourt Road, Owerri, on Thursday, October 3, 2024, where the commissioner listened to the grievances of both groups. He stated that the purpose of the meeting was to mediate the ongoing dispute over sand production costs.
Although no agreement was reached during the meeting, Chief Ibejiakor directed both parties to consult further with their members before returning for another round of discussions.
Speaking on behalf of the Miners’ Association, the General Secretary, Mr. David Onyemuche, explained that the miners proposed a slight increase in the cost of sand production, taking into account rising production and material costs, a move that the tipper drivers opposed.
