Mo Zhotian Construction Company, a Chinese engineering firm has offered 600 students from Igwebuike Grammar School Awka, scholarship.
According to the Managing Director, Tu Makuan, the scholarship which is for students from SS1 to SS3 would run for one academic year.
She stated that the gesture was part of the firm’s corporate social responsibility in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s free education policy.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh said that the philanthropy from the firm followed commitment of both teachers and students at the school.
She thanked the firm for its magnanimity, urging others to emulate such gestures.
She further said that she has passion for the school because of the dedication of its students to their studies. She narrated how she often sees several students on the road during school hours but is yet to see any Igwebuike Grammar school student roaming about aimlessly. She commended their brave spirit of academics which has now paid off.
In her speech she further encouraged the excited students, “If you are good at what you do, whether students or teachers, nature will always reward you. Someone else saw what I saw in you and decided to extend arm of philanthropy to you.”
Responding on behalf of the students, the Senior Prefect of the school, Chinedu Anago expressed appreciation to the benefactor for the gesture, pledging improved commitment to their studies to justify the scholarships.
