Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a heartbreaking loss in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, leading to an outpouring of criticism towards one of their own – Alex Iwobi. The midfielder, who happens to be the nephew of the legendary Jay-Jay Okocha faced a barrage of abuse on social media, forcing him to delete his Instagram photos and lock the comment section on his remaining video post.
Iwobi’s uncle and Nigerian football legend, Jay-Jay Okocha, has come to his defense, urging fans to show more support and unity. In an emotional plea, Okocha prayed for those who only see the negative in others and expressed his unwavering love and support for his nephew.
Ahmed Musa, captain of the Super Eagles, has also spoken out against the cyberbullying of Alex Iwobi. Musa emphasized the importance of unity and support for the team, highlighting that targeting a single player for the team’s shortcomings is both unfair and detrimental to the team’s morale.
“We are a team, and we win and lose together,” said Musa. “Alex is an integral part of our squad, and we need to stand by him, especially during tough times.”
Taking to his Instagram page on Tuesday, Okocha wrote, ‘’I pray for my country Nigeria and the people that can only hate and see nothing good in others, when effort counts for nothing, treat people the way you want them to treat you, all we have is this life is each other.
“We love you #alexanderiwobi and we keep going no matter what they say, the Lord is good all the time and we trust that his will be done in our lives amen.’
