In the bid to provide a wholesome education to children in Anambra State, the state government through the Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, has distributed sports equipment and materials to schools in Anambra.
The distribution of the sports kits and equipment to schools is procured under the 2019/2020 Universal Basic Education,UBE, Matching Grant for Anambra State and marks the fulfilment of government’s commitment to development of sports in public public and public mission schools.
The sport equipment and materials include jerseys, balls, badminton, table tennis kits, goal posts, skipping ropes, among numerous others.
Declaring open the official distribution of the equipment, Chairman House Committee on Education, Anambra State House of Assembly, Honourable Anayo Okpalaeke applauded Governor Chukwuma Soludo for graciously paying the Anambra State counterpart fund, adding that it is a testimony of the value that the Governor places on sports and physical activities which will help empower Anambra athletes and sport enthusiasts.
The Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh explained that the aim of Governor Chukwuma Soludo is to train all round children in the three domains of learning which include the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains hence the procurement of the sporting equipment saying that sports is an integral part of human development.
The Executive Chairman, ASUBEB, Dr. Vera Nwadinobi disclosed that the board has come up with a comprehensive sporting calendar that would compel all schools to engage in serious sporting activities within the academic year.
She said this will provide the road map for promoting sports in Anambra schools and charged all benefitting schools to ensure that the sports equipment being distributed are put to judicious use.
ASUBEB Sports Desk Officer, Mrs Anthonia Okoye in a remark, described sports as vital instrument for healthy living and all round development of both young and old and appreciated UBEC for its intervention and partnership with SUBEBs throughout the federation to develop sports activities in the state Schools.
In an interview, some of the students, Paschal Umejiofor from Community Secondary School Umuokpu-Awka and Gloria Otanwa from Ide Girls Secondary School, Enugwu-Ukwu extolled the Anambra State government for providing the equipment and materials.
Officials of ASUBEB, Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Sports officers, students and teachers were in attendance for the event which also featured symbolic distribution of the equipment and cultural dances.
