Arsenal have agreed to sign Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad for an initial £28.4 million, with an additional £4.2 million in add-ons.

The 28-year-old midfielder played a crucial role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory and has previous experience in the Premier League with Newcastle.

Merino’s signing will bolster Arsenal’s midfield options, offering a deeper-lying presence and complementing Declan Rice’s box-to-box style.

He will also provide competition for places alongside Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Odegaard.

With 28 caps for Spain, Merino brings valuable international experience to the Gunners’ squad.

Merino’s arrival marks Arsenal’s third signing of the transfer window, following the additions of Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spain goalkeeper David Raya.

Merino previously played for Newcastle in the 2017-2018 season before joining Real Sociedad, where he has since made 145 appearances and scored 17 goals.

His experience in the Premier League and La Liga will be invaluable to Arsenal as they seek to improve their performance in the upcoming season.
