APGA National Chairman Commiserates With Victims Of Stampedes In Abuja, Okija And Ibadan

Sharing is caring

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa, has expressed profound sadness and extended heartfelt condolences to the victims and families affected by the tragic stampedes in Abuja, Okija, and Ibadan.

In Abuja, on Saturday morning, a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama claimed the lives of no fewer than 10 individuals, while many others sustained injuries. The incident occurred during the distribution of food items to vulnerable and elderly individuals, an act of charity that tragically turned into a devastating event.

A similar incident occurred in Okija, where the Obi Jackson Foundation, headed by oil magnate Ernest Obiejesi, organized the distribution of rice to less-privileged individuals in the spirit of the Christmas season. Overcrowding led to chaos, leaving many dead and injured, overshadowing the good intentions behind the outreach.

In another heartbreaking occurrence, the Oyo State Police Command confirmed the death of 35 children in a stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. The event, intended to bring joy to children, turned catastrophic when the crowd far exceeded the anticipated number of attendees, overwhelming safety protocols and leading to a disaster.

Barrister Ezeokenwa described these tragedies as deeply sorrowful and avoidable, stressing the importance of adequate crowd management and improved safety measures during public events.

The National Chairman extended his condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the FCT Minister, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, and the bereaved families affected by these unfortunate events. He prayed for strength and comfort for all the families and for the quick recovery of those injured.

The APGA National Chairman also urged event organizers across the country to prioritize proper planning, collaboration with security agencies, and the implementation of comprehensive safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Barrister Ezeokenwa reaffirmed APGA’s commitment to advocating for policies and initiatives that safeguard lives and improve the well-being of Nigerians, especially during the festive season.
