Former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Emeka Anyaoku, has called on President Bola Tinubu to convene a national constituent assembly to produce a new draft constitution for Nigeria.
Anyaoku, who is also the Chairman of the Patriots, made the request during a meeting with the President at the State House in Abuja. He proposed that the National Constituent Assembly consist of individuals elected by the people on a non-party basis, with three representatives from each of the 36 states and one from the Federal Capital Territory.
The assembly’s mandate would be to produce a new draft constitution, which would then be subjected to a national referendum to give Nigerians a chance to determine the new constitution.
Anyaoku also advised the President to dialogue with the leaders of the ongoing protests across the country and to ensure that law enforcement agencies avoid using lethal weapons in managing the protests to prevent casualties.
The Patriots’ chairman emphasized the need for a new constitution to address the country’s challenges, stating that the current constitution is inadequate. He urged the President to take immediate action to address the country’s crises.
