Blossom Fount School in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, has been sanctioned for one month after allegedly charging primary school pupils N5,000 to purchase forms for the position of Head Pupil.
The sanction was announced on Friday by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, who expressed strong disapproval of the practice.
She said that charging students money to be appointed to positions was completely unacceptable to the government.
The sanction followed reports that the school had collected N5,000 from pupils who wished to contest for the position of Head Pupil in the school’s primary section.
Prof. Chuma-Udeh condemned the practice, describing it as a way of “selling the psyche of children to the highest bidder from a young age,” which she insisted was entirely unacceptable under the Soludo-led administration.
“Monetizing the election of the school’s Head Pupil is unacceptable. It amounts to selling the psyche of children to the highest bidder from their formative years,” she stated.
The Commissioner further revealed that an investigation was underway to determine the full extent of the situation and to assess how the school is being operated.
