Security operatives in Anambra State have arrested two suspects and recovered a large quantity of gunpowder concealed in a bag of cassava flakes (garri), one locally made pistol, and live ammunition.
The police-led Joint Security Force, while on routine patrol along the Pillar-Pole area of Aguata on Sunday, intercepted a suspect—name withheld—carrying three bags of garri.
The spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the operatives searched the suspect and discovered a large quantity of gunpowder hidden beneath the edible product.
According to him, preliminary information revealed that the suspect was en route to a criminal camp to deliver groceries for consumption and the gunpowder for the production of improvised explosives for the gang.
The suspect is currently in custody and assisting the police in apprehending other gang members.
In another development, operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SPACS), acting on credible information, stormed a criminal hideout in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area on Wednesday, arresting one Nelson Wisdom, a male from Etsako East, Edo State, and recovering one locally fabricated pistol with two live rounds of ammunition.
Ikenga also stated that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, reiterated that the police command and other security agencies would continue to act on information to sustain the onslaught of operations and thwart the plans of criminal elements in the state.
He also mentioned that all suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
