AFCON 2023: Nigerian Defender Named In Equatorial Guinea Squad

It is common to see players of a particular country playing for another country in international football competitions like the Nations cup

History is replete of such scenario. England, Germany, Spian, France have all in the past and even presently have players from other countries playing for them

John Fashanu a Nigerian in the eighties played for England, Kevin Boateng of Ghana played for Germany, Ansu Fati also a Ghanaian by birth but plays for Spain and Zinedine Zidane originally from Algeria but played for France even winning the world cup for the French national team in 1998

The ongoing AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast has been caught up in the same web as Nigeria’s Group A opponent Equatorial Guinea has in their ranks a Nigerian Charles Ono for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ondo also eligible to play for Spain was born in Madrid, Spain, to a Nigerian father and Equatorial Guinean mother.

The 20-year-old was also eligible to represent Spain and England.

Ondo was first called up to the Equatorial Guinea national team for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Botswana.

The left-back made his debut on September 6, 2023.

Ondo with jersey number twelve was an unused substitute in the 1-1draw between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea
