The Abia State Government has introduced a new policy initiative designed to prioritize and promote locally produced goods and services across the state.
Under this new directive, all procurements by the government will now be restricted to items and services made or offered within Abia State.
The policy, which aims to strengthen the state’s economic foundation and create a more favorable business environment for local entrepreneurs, was formally announced on Monday during a press conference held in Umuahia, the state capital.
Speaking to the media, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Okey Kanu, said the policy is part of the state administration’s broader efforts to encourage homegrown innovation and support indigenous industries. According to him, the Made-in-Abia initiative is expected to stimulate production, increase employment opportunities, and keep wealth circulating within the state.
He further noted that this move reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to economic self-reliance and sustainable development, urging citizens and businesses to align with the vision of an economically empowered Abia.
The implementation of the policy is anticipated to begin across all government ministries, departments, and agencies, marking a significant step toward industrial revival and local content development in the region.
“This policy, when fully operational, would make it possible that all goods and services obtainable in the state would not be procured from outside the state.
“This is a bold reaction to the unraveling of both the national and global economies and the resultant economic headwinds and headline inflation prevalent in the country.
“As a forward-thinking government, the Abia State Government is deliberate about the management of its local economy to boost the production of goods and services responsible for the overall health of the state’s economy,” he said.
