Abia Journalists Laud Governor Otti’s Developmental Strides

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Abia State Council has commended Governor Alex Otti for his administration’s efforts to revamp the state’s education sector, infrastructure, and pension system.

At its monthly congress held on April 16, 2025, the union applauded the governor’s commitment to quality education, exemplified by his recent announcement to recruit 4,000 additional teachers.

The congress also praised Governor Otti’s decision to revisit the issue of pension and gratuity for retirees, describing it as a step in the right direction.

Furthermore, the union commended the governor’s infrastructure development projects across the state, including the upgrading of government offices and the restoration of basic amenities at the Ogurube Layout Workers Secretariat.

In the area of security, the congress urged the state government to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure a secure environment for farmers, as the farming season commences.

Additionally, the union requested partnership with the state government to access scorecards from various ministries, departments, and agencies, in line with the media’s role in holding leaders accountable.

The congress also called on the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to review the recent electricity tariff hike, which is affecting citizens, particularly those in the Band A category.

In a related development, the Abia State Council of the NUJ inaugurated two committees: the 1st Abia NUJ Short Story Competition for Secondary Schools and the Editorial Board of Inside Story Magazine.

The committees, comprising seasoned journalists, are tasked with promoting literary excellence and showcasing the union’s contributions to national development.

Chairman of the council, Comrade Chidi Asonye, emphasized the importance of the committees in making the council active and relevant in the state’s development.

National Treasurer of the union, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, and pioneer Chairman of the council, Comrade Ogbonnaya Iheaka, urged the committees to discharge their duties with integrity and professionalism.

The chairmen of the two committees, Ezeogo Boniface Okoro and Mr. Emmanuel Ugwu, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and pledged to deliver on their mandates.
