The Executive Chairman of Ideato South Local Government Area, Hon. Okwara Okechukwu ‘Morocco’ (HOO’M’), has called on ministers of the gospel to desist from commercializing the gospel of Jesus Christ and the ministry. This passionate plea was made during the 9th Synod of the Diocese of Ideato, Anglican Communion, held at St. Luke Anglican Church, Umueshi, within the Umueshi Archdeaconry, on Saturday, 3rd of May, 2025.
In his remarks, Hon. Okwara echoed the sentiments of the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Rev. Henry S.O. Okeke, who emphasized the need for clergy to maintain a clear separation between their spiritual calling and material pursuits. The Executive Chairman noted that the increasing commercialization of the gospel has undermined the spiritual effectiveness of the clergy, leading to a diminished impact on the lives of the laity.
As a devoted Anglican from childhood, Hon. Okwara expressed deep concern about the growing trend of clergy prioritizing financial gain over spiritual guidance. He warned that this development has contributed to a decline in church attendance and devotion among faithful followers, ultimately affecting the church’s ability to positively influence society.
The Executive Chairman’s call to action underscored the importance of restoring the spiritual integrity of the ministry. He stressed that clergy should focus on nurturing the faith of their congregants, rather than exploiting them for financial gain. By doing so, the church can regain its moral authority and make a meaningful impact on the lives of its members.
In a gesture of solidarity with the bishop’s charge, Hon. Okwara made generous donations to the church, demonstrating his commitment to supporting the spiritual growth and development of the Diocese of Ideato.
Echezona Okafor.
