Nigerians’ expectations at the 66th Grammy were met with huge disappointment as all Afrobeat stars nominated by the Recording Academy lost in their respective categories.
Afrobeat stars Burna Boy, Davido, Tems, Ayra Starr, Olamide, and Asake lost all 10 of their nominations across five categories.
The inaugural ‘Best African Music Performance’ trophy went to 22-year-old South African singer Tyla, who earned the prize with her 2023 track, “Water”.
Davido, who lost all three of his nominations, took to his Twitter page to congratulate Tyla on her win.
Congratulations on your win @Tyllaaaaaaa ! Big One for africa! Keep soaring ! 🔥⭐️

He had earlier stated in an interview before the show that he was okay with whoever wins, emphasizing that being nominated was a huge opportunity for Africans, and he’s grateful for the recognition and opportunity.
I'm just happy that we all get to shine."
