Abia Assembly Declares Ohafia Erosion Sites Death Traps, Vows To Get Solution
The Abia State House of Assembly committee on environment, urban renewal and new-map has today, Friday 11th July, 2025 declared the erosion sites in Ebem and Amaekpu Ohafia committee as death traps.

A statement by the Information Officer, Abia State House of Assembly (ABHA), Mr. Adiele Loveday Azubuike explains that the visit was a part of the measures to address the incessant erosion menace threatening the lives and properties of people of Ebem and Amaekpu in Ohafia Local Government Area.
EkweAnaedo reports that during the visit, the House committee on the Environment, Urban Renewal and New-map at the 8th Abia State House of Assembly, led by the chairman, Nwoke Kalu Mba visited seven notable erosion sites and a few others as well.
The House committee promised to give recommendations that would draw the attention of both the state and the federal government to the affected areas.
The visited sites includes: Ekeluogo erosion site in Ebem; Ndi Ukpolo erosion site in Ebem; Ndi Inyima compound erosion site in Ebem; Ndi Nsi Eziukwu/Ndi Idika Awa erosion site in Ebem; Uzo Nkpogolo erosion site in Ebem Ohafia Road leading to Federal Government College, Ohafia; Onyirimba Road erosion site in Amaekpu; and the Bakassi Avenue erosion site in Amaekpu Ohafia.

As gathered, the committee members unanimously expressed shock over the levels of destruction already caused by the erosion menace so far to the people of Ebem and Amaekpu in Ohafia communities.
The Mayor of Ohafia Local Government Area, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu speaking earlier during the visit thanked the committee for coming to help his people, and described their oversight function as a welcome development.
HRH Eze Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, the king of Ebem Ohafia, represented by his Traditional Prime Minister, Chief Kalu Okorie, thanked the chairman of the committee, Nwoke Kalu Mba for what he termed his leadership qualities and outstanding records.
The royal father urged the committee chairman not to relent his efforts in speaking for his people, stressing that erosion has destroyed many buildings in Ebem Ohafia.
Mr Kalu Ogboso Nnoke, second assistant secretary general of Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), said that several age grade groups have spent over four hundred million naira on the preventive measures of erosion menace within Ebem Ohafia for many years.
He appealed to Governor Alex Otti and the Federal government to came to their rescue and also commended Nwoke Kalu Mba for raising the matter at the floor of the Abia House of Addembly recently.
EkweAnaedo reports that the committee members and dignitaries that were part of the visit include, Hon. Nwoke Kalu Mba (Chairman), Hon. Nnamdi Chimdi Ibekwe (member Bende North), Hon. Lucky Nweke Johnson (Member Isuikwuato), Hon. Ume Matthias (Member Umunneochi), and Mrs Ukwu Amaka (committee secretary).
Others are Jennifer Chukwudi (assist. Committee Secretary) including Eme Iro Eme (Ohafia Deputy Mayor), Ohafia elected Councillors and stakeholders of Ebem and Amaekpu Ohafia, the youths as well as Eze in council in Ebem Ohafia.
