The Nigerian House of Representatives has introduced a bill to amend Section 49 of the 1999 Constitution, allocating six special seats for women and persons living with disabilities (PWDs).
Sponsored by House Spokesman Akintunde Rotimi, the proposed amendment seeks to increase the total number of representatives from 360 to 366.
The six additional seats will be distributed evenly across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, ensuring one representative from each group per region. Candidates must meet the same qualifications as regular House members, and elections will be conducted through an electoral college comprising members from national associations of each special group.
This initiative aims to address the historical marginalization of women and individuals with disabilities in Nigeria’s political landscape. By providing dedicated representation, the country can foster greater participation, address specific challenges, and promote inclusive policy-making.
The bill’s passage will mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards inclusive governance. As it progresses through the legislative process,
