The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziak Salako, has announced that he has adopted an elephant as a member of his family as part of his efforts to contribute to the conservation of the critically endangered species in Nigeria.
Speaking at the launch of the Nigeria Elephant Action Plan (NEAP) in Abuja, Dr. Salako explained that his decision to adopt an orphaned elephant was a personal commitment to supporting the protection of the remaining 300-400 elephants in the country.
Dr. Salako emphasized the importance of elephants in maintaining biodiversity, stating, “Elephants are integral to our community and heritage. They support flora and fauna growth and are vital for biodiversity.”
He noted that Nigeria’s elephant population has faced significant challenges, including habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflicts, resulting in the loss of 99 percent of the country’s elephants.
The Minister highlighted the importance of the NEAP in providing a strategic framework for elephant conservation, emphasizing the need for a collaborative approach involving the government, Elephant Protection Initiative Foundation, Wildlife Conservation Society, and local communities.
He stressed that the plan’s key components, including enhanced law enforcement, anti-poaching measures, and community engagement, are crucial for ensuring the long-term survival of Nigeria’s elephant population.
