Sharing is caring

Reggae legend Buju Banton has made a surprising revelation about his ancestry, stating that he has Igbo heritage.

In a recent interview on the “Drink Champs” podcast, Banton claimed that his tribe, the Maroons, originated from the Igbo tribe of Nigeria.

Banton expressed concern about the threat to his Indigenous land and way of life, blaming the Jamaican government for bringing in foreigners to displace the Maroons.

He stated, “The current government is seeking to bring Chinese and other nationalities into the Cockpit region, an Indigenous sacred region, to usurp us, the Maroons, as the warriors.”

The Maroons, also known as Blackmaroons, are Indigenous warriors who fought against the British.

Banton proudly declared, “My generation originated from Nigeria. I am an Igbo man according to my bloodline.”

This revelation has sparked interest in the connection between Jamaican and Nigerian cultures, and highlights the struggles of Indigenous communities to protect their land and heritage.
