In line with commitment to preserve and promote Anambra’s cultural legacy, the Igboukwu Museum is currently undergoing a refurbishment.

The refurbishment will transform the museum into a world-class magnetic hub for tourists, scholars, and researchers.

Like this year’s International Museum Day theme; “Museums for Education and Research,” the Igboukwu Museum on completion will be a static repository of artifacts for research purposes and a dynamic classroom where history breathes and curiosity thrives.

Speaking, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Mr. Don Onyenji said that the refurbishing is a welcome development that would attract both local and international tourists, researchers as well as scholars to the state.

“Anambra has a rich cultural heritage and the Igboukwu Museum is a repository of our stories and a poignant reminder of the importance of safeguarding our cultural treasures for the generations yet to come. It depicts the kind of life our forebears lived and their talents in arts and crafts.”

He commended the governor for his interest and approval of the upgrading of the Museum and approval of the Arts And Crafts Exhibition held in October 2023 during which the governor patronized some of the exhibitors with a lot of monetary investment as a way of encouraging the visual and creative Arts industry among the citizens.

“Some of the uniqueness and exquisite crafts of our forebears such as the Igboukwu roped bronze pot were taken and exported outside the state by the colonial masters.”

Commissioner Onyenji added that he would soon continue to pay official visits to privately owned museums in Anambra State and commended persons like Obi of Onitsha for their interest and promotion of Museums around the state.

“Therefore, I implore you to seize this opportunity to embark on a personal odyssey of discovery. Explore these cultural gems, immerse yourself into our shared narrative and unearth the splendour of our heritage,” he remarked.
