Youths in the oil-reach Ohaji/Egbema council area of Imo state has written to the Imo State House of Assembly to pass a law to check and jail any contractor who abandoned projects in the oil-producing areas of Imo. In the letter endorsed by the President National Congress of Ohaji Youth NACOY, Comrade Nwosu Nicholas Tochukwu, he observed that such a situation has become a reoccurring scenario in the Niger Delta region of Imo State. The youth body called on the lawmakers to as a matter of urgency summon all the contractors (indigenous contractors) handling strategic projects in Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta as the case may be.The president regretted that considering both the huge natural and human resources the two local government councils of Ohaji/Egbema and Oguts contribute to both the state and federal government, adding that they see abandoning projects after collecting mobilisation as an act of wickedness to humanity. The group observed that those abandoned road projects that were littered with oil oil-producing have caused the people many years of hardship and further escalated the insecurity in those communities. According to him, it has slowed down the response time of the security agencies in the event of any security emergency. He said: “Over the years, the people of the hydrocarbon areas of the state have suffered untold hardship due to poor road network, lack of electricity and potable water”. They pointed out that many contractors have continually held the people of this area to ransom by abandoning or even diverting jobs meant for this area which they gladly collected from either NDDC, Oil Companies, or even the State Government. The body therefore suggested that a law should be made by the State Assembly to check and jail contractors who abandoned projects in Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta.
