Heavy rainfall in northeastern Nigeria has caused severe flooding, resulting in at least 49 deaths and displacing thousands of people.

The states of Jigawa, Adamawa, and Taraba have been hit hard, with 41,344 people affected and 693 hectares of agricultural land destroyed.

The National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) warns that the situation is dire, with more flooding expected in the region.

This latest flooding comes after Nigeria experienced its worst flooding in over a decade in 2022, which killed over 600 people and displaced 1.4 million.

The government had predicted flooding in 31 states, with 148 local government areas at high risk.

NEMA spokesperson Manzo Ezekiel stated that the agency is working to mitigate the effects of the flood, but the situation remains challenging.

The flooding has also added to the country’s food security concerns, as farmers have been forced to desert their farms in the northeast due to repeated attacks by militants.
