Enugu State Governor Peter Mba had the honor of delivering a thought-provoking paper titled “Enugu State, Nigeria: New Political Leadership; Bold Economic Vision – Spotlight on the Health and Education Strategies” at the London School of Economics (LSE) on Thursday. During his speech, Governor Mba emphasized the campaign motto of “Tomorrow Is Here,” emphasizing the long-term impact of every decision made by his administration on the future of Enugu State and its children.
In his address, Governor Mba highlighted the administration’s modest yet significant efforts in the health and education sectors, as well as in security, ICT, and infrastructure. The government’s budget allocation for education reflects their strong belief in the power of public education. To enhance the educational landscape, the administration plans to construct 260 Smart Green Schools, each equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as interactive digital whiteboards, an Internet system, AI and robotics centers, modern ICT centers, science labs, multimedia libraries, creative production studios, 25 classrooms, and 700 android tablets. This ambitious initiative aims to transform education in Enugu State.
Governor Mba also shared positive news about the decline in infant and maternal mortality rates in Enugu State. The administration has been diligently working to eliminate the factors contributing to these deaths, particularly the absence of skilled birth attendants at health facilities. As a result, the percentage of births attended to by skilled health personnel has increased from 39 percent to 42 percent since the pre-election period. The administration’s goal is to achieve a 100 percent threshold by the end of 2025, ensuring the well-being of mothers and children across the state.
Governor Mba emphasized that bold and creative governance is crucial for rapid economic development in Nigeria. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the nation’s brand of presidential federalism, which centralizes the nation’s revenues and hinders social and economic progress. However, he expressed confidence in the ability of innovative leadership to overcome these obstacles.
Governor Mba expressed his gratitude to the London School of Economics for providing him with the platform to engage with a diverse global audience and showcase the promising future of Enugu State under his administration.
