Electoral Committee Proposes Salary Cuts for Legislators and Executives to Reduce Election Costs

Sharing is caring

In a bid to make elections more cost-effective, the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters has proposed a significant slash in salaries for legislators and executive members.

The committee suggests reducing legislators’ salaries by 30% and executives’ salaries by 40%.

During an interactive session with judiciary and political parties, the committee also considered other proposals to reduce election costs. These include:
Conducting all elections (presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and State Houses of Assembly) in a single day

Linking continuous voter registration to the National Identity Number (NIN) for added security and cost savings

Making the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman appointment more transparent by advertising the position to interested parties

The committee received 35 proposals from the IPAC Chair during the 3-day retreat. The Chairman of the joint committee promises to engage with INEC and Nigerians to gather feedback and ensure smooth elections in the future.
