Court Sentences Policeman For Attempting To Arrest A Suspect During An Active Session In Imo State

A Policeman identified as Abubakar Mohammed has been sentenced to two days in prison for unlawfully disrupting court proceedings at the Orogwe Customary Court in Owerri West Local Government Area, Imo State.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, involved the officer attempting to arrest a suspect during an active court session, causing significant disruption to proceedings.

A video circulating online shows lawyers and litigants restraining the officer, with background voices demanding immediate sanctions for his actions.

A lawyers present during the commotion confirmed that the officer had been sentenced to two days of imprisonment for breaching court protocol. The Policeman and his colleagues involved were reportedly from the Ogbaku Divisional Headquarters.

When contacted, Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, stated that the officers involved had been arrested and would face trial for their misconduct. He assured the public that appropriate disciplinary actions would follow.

“The Imo State Police Command has addressed the situation, and it is now under control. The officers involved in unlawfully entering the Orogwe Customary Court premises to effect an arrest without adhering to due process have been apprehended. They will face trial, and necessary disciplinary measures will be taken against them,” Okoye said.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order within court premises and ensuring the effective administration of justice in the state.
