One killed on Friday, while several police cars were vandalised at the Jabi-Dakibiyu police post, following a violent protest in the Jabi area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Musa, said youths armed with sticks, stones, and other dangerous objects descended on police cars parked outside the station and destroyed them.

He said two boys had been fighting each other over a phone charger. “One stabbed the other and left a big cut. A police officer came and rescued the person that was stabbed and rushed him to hospital. The police later arrested the assailant.

“But when some youths discovered that the boy in hospital had died, they returned to the police station and demanded for the person that stabbed their friend. They were informed that the boy had been transferred to Life Camp Police Division for proper investigation.

“The situation immediately went out of control, resulting in clashes between the mob and law enforcement officers.”

He said the youths accused the police of receiving a bribe in order to rescue the boy and started destroying vehicles at the premises.

Adding that the youths set the building ablaze and burnt some police documents.

The policeman, who didn’t want his name mentioned, because he is not allowed to speak to the press, said an investigation into the case has commenced and he also confirmed that no officer was killed during the attack.
