There are glaring indications that Nigeria’s President, Mohammadu Buhari may be prosecuted at the global court, International Criminal Court (ICC) over perceived human rights violations and acts of terrorism in several parts of Nigeria.
The President will be expected to explain all that he knows about the deadly Boko Haram terrorists that have killed thousands of citizens, maimed, raped and committed acts of arson, especially the notorious Fulani Herdsmen and tribesmen of the former President who have allegedly committed more atrocious acts of terrorism against Nigerian citizens.
Though, Boko Haram had been in existence before the coming of Buhari’s government, it is widely believed that the outlawed group became daring during the period of his administration as Nigeria’s President despite huge budgetary allocations to the military to combat insurgency under his eight year brutal rule.
It was gathered that Miyetti Allah, umbrella organization of Fulani Herdsmen in Nigeria was emboldened in their approach of defending actions of brutality by their fellow Fulani Herdsmen under Buhari’s government.
The indifference and body language of the former President on issues concerning the recklessness of the Fulani Herdsmen accused of mayhem in several Nigerian communities and the unperturbed disposition of the former President which has continued to attract wide condemnations remain suspicious till date.
Even as a retired Army General and former Military Head of State, General Mohammadu Buhari bluntly refused to apply his wealth of experience in dealing with numerous security challenges facing the country during his regime.
This singular act of pretence and inaction against the perpetrators of violent crimes by the Fulani Herdsmen and reports of military collaboration in the insurgency and issue of repentant Boko Haram where blood-sucking and rag-tag fighters were granted amnesty by the Federal Government still remain suspicious.
The unfolding events aftermath of the 2013 abduction of over two hundred Chibok school girls remain suspicious. It has remained so as some suspected major players who have continued to negotiate with bandits have made very sensitive remarks which ought to have been taken seriously by the former President if he really meant well for his country and citizens.
Nigeria’s security agents have also been found wanting in acting on available intelligence which could have led to diminishing the architecture of the entire security network of the insurgents and improve on lapses created by insurgency in the country.
One begins to wonder if the Buhari was the Military Commander of the 1980’s that gave the religious and rampaging Maitasine sect fight of their lives and the experience of the invading Chadian soldiers into the nation’s territory at that time.
Something is wrong somewhere! Maybe Nigerians have been fooled for too long with the hide and seek game over the fight against Boko Haram, banditry, killer Fulani Herdsmen and kidnapping in various parts of the country.
Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary General’s visit to Nigeria , in particular Borno State should have been an eye opener to the global leader on terrorism in Nigeria. We believe Guterres must have heard directly from surviving victims of terrorism perpetuated by Buhari’s Fulani Herdsmen.
Buhari will have to present himself for investigation by ICC on charges of crime against humanity perpetuated under his administration for eight good years.
Nigerians and the world are fidgeting over billions of dollars expended to fight insurgency which never yielded positive results and the shed of innocent blood of citizens whom the government swore to protect.
The visit of Antonio Guterres to Nigeria should have afforded the United Nations Secretary- General the opportunity to appraise situation on ground whether that government in Nigeria was actually committed to the fine.
